Sidmouth all-rounder Josh Bess is closing in on 750 top flight runs in the Tolchards Devon League Premier Division season.

His 70 against Exmouth on Saturday leaves him on 725 runs with three matchdays remaining.

One remarkable statistic about the Bess season with the bat so far is that, in his 12 innings, he has been dismissed 11 times and only once has he had his stumps knocked over – that by Toby Codd in the game at Bovey Tracey when he was bowled for 31. Bess, who has a batting average this season of 65.9, has been run out twice, trapped leg before twice and caught six times.

His highest score to date is the 120 he made before bring run out in the home win over Bradninch – he also hit a century (105) in the home win over Plymouth.

Bess needs one more wicket to reach 20 for the league season, to date he has claimed 19 at a cost of 421 runs and so is currently averaging 22.17 with the ball.
