Some familiar faces were at the prize giving to collect the top prize on President's Day.

Kevin Legg, Roy Turner and David Sheldrick again out played the field and scored 87 points.

The format for the day was a Stableford scoring system, full handicap, in teams of three, one score to count on the first six holes, two scores on the middle six holes and all three to count on the last six.

Golf knows no age barriers and can be enjoyed by all, as it was proved with the second place trio of James Pickard, George Barber and David Bater, On the 13th they managed to total 11 points on a single hole, George with a shot and James both birdied with David having an eagle. The top two teams were five clear of third place.

The President thanked all involved in running the day, especially Dennis Williamson for being the official starter from 7am until 2.30pm.

Simon Emerson hit great form at just the right moment to take victory in the Aylmer Cup.

His card showed a very impressive back nine for a 22 handicap golfer, seven pars, one bogey and the only blot being an eight on the 13th. A gross 80 nett 58 won by three strokes from Jonathon Lee (61) and James Pickard (61).

James is enjoying a purple patch and is now in an elite group of golfers to be off + hcp figure - which means James must birdie the 18th to have a nett par!

After a disappointing defeat away to Downes Crediton, the B-team were back to winning ways, 4-2, against Windwhistle Golf Club, who fielded some single figure handicap players ,and some higher handicapped players that were related to Dick Turpin. The nearest the pin prizes, sponsored by Acanthus Press, Stuart Collings, East Devon Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic Ltd and The Radway Inn, were won by Shane Scott (Windwhistle) on the seventh hole, and one of Sidmouth's up-and-coming young players, the sprightly Terry Carter, who took the prize on the 12th hole.

The results were: Colin Macklin and Bob Welsman won 6/4, Bob Webber and Alec Salway lost 3/1, John Barnard and Terry Carter won 1 up, David Roberts (Sir) and J Carroll won 5/4, Keith Newton and Don Cooper lost 2/1, Gary Adam and Ian (played badly in the morning) Bright won 1 up.

Sidmouth Golf club Seniors have won both of their recent matches. At Downes Crediton they recorded a very creditable 31/2-21/2 win with a number of the games being very close.

A good example of this was the game involving Tony Salvidge and Bob Cook who won when Tony holed a long putt from off the green on the 18th hole.

In many of these friendly matches, a bottle of wine is offered for the visitor whose drive is on the green and nearest the pin on one of the short holes, and Downes Crediton also offers a prize for home players.

Unfortunately, none of the home players managed to hit the green, but John Bainbridge upheld Sidmouth's honour by taking the visitors' prize.

A week later Sidmouth was at home for the return match against Exeter.

As usual, the match was played in a very friendly spirit although a desperate attempt by Dieter Ritz to get back on even terms in his match by playing from the Ladies' tee did bring a protest from his opponents!

Other team members fared rather better than Dieter and his partner and in the end Sidmouth recorded a 4-2 win
