Sidmouth College Student William Fryer finished his run competing in the National Badminton Tournaments last weekend on a high.

The 14-year-old picked up three more trophies, a medal and prize money from the Torbay Open Junior Championship.

He gained a bronze in the Under-15 singles then upped his game to take gold in the Under-17 singles, beating the number-one seed from Cornwall 21-16.

The youngster then paired up with doubles partner Kieran Wong from Plymouth to bag gold in the Under-15 doubles and silver in the Under-17 doubles.

Fryer gets great support from Sidmouth College who allow him the free use of the courts at the College during term time whilst the teenager also gets great support from St John’s International school who have offered the use of their courts during the holidays.

It’s been a marvellous season so far for Fryer who has picked up a dozen gold, four silver and five bronze medals.

Last Christmas he attended the Kam fook Academy where he competed in a 700-strong junior open tournament in Penang and brought home a bronze after reaching the semi-finals in a doubles tournament.

He is coached by Richard Lane twice a week during term time and is looking for local sponsors in order to increase his coaching hours in preparation for his entry to the Under-17 circuit in September.

Fryer is a member of the Exeter University badminton performance centre and the Devon Squad which means further training on Tuesdays and the occasional Sundays.

He is dedicated to his chosen sport and spends everyday following a fitness circuit devised by his coach.

He has completed just two full seasons on the national circuit, one in the Under-13s and one in the Under-15s.

Now back to full fitness, he is hoping that he will get an opportunity to complete two full years up on the Under-17 circuit to reach the gold level he aspires to.
