Sidmouth 5 (20 pts), Torquay 6ths 0 (1 pt ).

Back to back home games were a great opportunity to start the necessary winning run for promotion which began with a 5-0 drubbing of bottom club Torquay 6, writes Rob Cann.

There were opening wins for Rob Cann 15-5, 15-12, 15-11 over Ian Huddard, whilst Paul Clare defeated James Cayford 15-13, 15-8, 15-9.

Torquay did secure one point on the night when visiting third string Rich Rendle secured the third game in the 15-10, 15-9, 13-15, 15-9 defeat to home player Chris Marriott.

The remaining two rubbers were both won in straight games, Nigel Desousa defeating Torquay captain Dave Kennedy 15-14, 15-6, 15-14 and top string Chris Woodruff completely demolishing Torquay No 1 Dave Webb 15-7, 15-1, 15-2.

SIDMOUTH 4 (18 pts ), BARNSTAPLE 1 ( 7 pts ).

The second home game saw Sidmouth entertain second placed Barnstaple Squash Club.Rob Cann got the evening off to a great start by defeating old adversary Matt Dearle.

Having been playing each other over the last 20 years or so, both players knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses but it was Rob who gained the upper hand early and never allowed Matt to settle. The resultant 15-10, 15-13, 15-12 score testament to Rob's excellent season to date.

On the adjacent court, Paul Clare won a close match with fellow No 4 Rob Simpson winning a final game decider.

Each player dominated at stages but it was Paul who came through in the end 15-14, 8-15, 15-6, 12-15, 15-9.

Chris Marriott secured Sidmouth's team win with a tight five game victory over Miles Sellick. Chris should have gone on to win more comfortably but minor lapses in shot quality and concentration allowed Miles to stay in the rubber. However, he did win 15-12, 9-15, 15-5, 9-15, 15-11.

Barnstaple's only success of the evening came at second string when undefeated Richard Harrison beat Sidmouth's Nigel Desousa 15-6, 12-15, 15-6, 15-7. Credit should go to Nigel who won a valuable point under very difficult circumstances.

The final rubber saw the only two undefeated top strings in the division, Sidmouth's Chris Woodruff and Barnstaple’s Toby Davies battle it out to maintain their winning records.

Chris dominated the opening game, the second was a closer affair which went to a tie-break before Chris raced through the third game to record a 15-4, 17-14, 15-6 win, in the process, continuing his undefeated league run.
