Sidmouth 2nds were involved in arguably the ‘shock result’ of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League season when they were beaten at Clyst Hydon.

The reason this result can be considered the ‘shock of the campaign’ is because the Fortfield side had travelled to Mid Devon with a playing record of played 10 and won 10 and faced a home side who went into the match with a played 10 and lost 10 record!

Clyst Hydon batted first and were led to a healthy 295-4 by Ian Sutton (85), Sinthuran Thevaraj (55) and Mike Cliff (54no) – this off 27 deliveries with three sixes and seven fours and 42 from opener Gwilym Davies.

Seven different bowlers were used by Sidmouth, but just four wickets were claimed with the successful bowlers being Daley Holmes (1-37 in eight), Jordan Fowler (1-53 in seven), Byron Knowles (1-32 in three) and Charlie Dibble (1-26 in two).

The Sidmouth run chase suffered the loss of opener Nick Mansfield, who did not trouble the scorers, and, with the score on 39, skipper Anthony Griffiths fell for 16.

Jash Patidar and Byron Knowles took the total to 99 when Patidar became the third man down having scored 25. Tom Wainwright joined teenager Knowles and they took the total to 168 when Knowles was caught for a 54-ball seven boundary 38.

Wainwright then lost Thomas Simmons, for three, and Daley Holmes, without troubling the scorers, to leave the run chase on 171-6 before Wainwright was the seventh wicket to fall when he was finally out to the 62nd delivery he faced having scored 13 fours in a fine knock of 64. Jordan Fowler was next to fall, bowled for 10 to leave Sidmouth 230-8 and when Fionn Wardrop was the ninth man down, caught for four, Sidmouth had their last pair of Charlie Dibble and Ed Hurley at the wicket with the winning line still 51 runs away. The last pair chipped away at the target, but the overs were also running out and, when Hurley was last man out for a splendid 44 ball, nine-boundary 56, Sidmouth were all out for 274 with just two overs remaining.
