Sidmouth seniors visited neighbours Axe Cliff last Thursday where they found perfect weather conditions and stunning views over the East Devon coastline, writes Chris Grubb.

Seniors captain Nigel Sharp accompanied by Rod Wallace were seven down after nine holes, but fought back to only lose four-and-three.

The Seniors captain likes to keep a reliable player in the lower order and has been keeping past seniors’ captain Peter Emery in this role for a couple of matches, but he had a ‘diva’ moment and insisted on going up the order of play (we think it is so he can spend more time in the bar!). Unfortunately, one of the host players did not turn up until later which meant the pairing of Emery and Gunston playing last again, much to the amusement of the rest of the team.

In the new order of play, second out Colin Mitchell andJohn Bainbridge lost by two holes.

Third out Chris Grubb and Tony Stoyle won four-and-three in some comfort and fourth out Dieter Ritz and Bob Cook also won four-and-three.

Glyn Hewitt and John Sanders had a tight match, but were eventually beaten on the final green with the last putt of the contest!

Last, but not least, Peter Emery and Ray Gunston managed to get out, but went down three-and-two to the Axe Cliff replacement who played particularly well.

Overall Sidmouth Seniors lost the match 4-2, but drew some comfort in Nigel Sharp winning the Nearest the Pin prize. The return match at Sidmouth will be on September 18.
