Sidmouth hosted Dawlish Warren seniors for the second leg of their annual fixture on a warm and pleasant afternoon with conditions just right for golf, writes Hugh Dorliac.

Acting captain Bruce Harcourt and Brian Cole led out and soon forged a comfortable lead which eventually resulted in a five-and-four success, sealed on the 14th hole.

Roger Bawden and Hugh Dorliac also played well, winning four-and-three, which was boosted by an outrageous win on the 12th where Sidmouth’s drive set out left, but a bit low, and headed for the trees. Barely flicking a leaf, it travelled through at least six trees to land pin high left of the green. A chip and a putt secured the hole!

H Thompson reported that his partner, Ken Price, played well in their tie and this helped them to a six-and-five.

Paul Blay and John Sanders had a tougher game and at the halfway point were all square. They went two up by the 16th and a half on 17 took the match. Vernon Ruffle and Brian Le Masurier had a tougher time of it and unluckily went down on the last hole. The Player of the Day was Ray Gunston, flying solo for Sidmouth, as his partner was a no-show. Undaunted, he flew into a good lead being eight up after 10 holes! Having to give his opponents a shot on eleven saw them win that hole only to manage just half on twelve to go down seven-and-six. Ray’s was a magnificent effort which helped the team to an overall 5-1 win to leave honours ending all square after the two legs.
