Having lost two matches to the recent bad weather, Sidmouth Seniors hosted near neighbours Honiton on Thursday on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year, writes Hugh Dorliac.

In the scant few days of dry weather, the greens staff had transformed the course to kick off the golfing season for real.

Home captain Tony Stoyle and his partner Barry Jones led off with high hopes and for a while kept in touch, but eventually the Honiton pair prevailed, winning on the 17th by a score of two-and-one.

Despite this worrying start, the remaining pairs of Doug Goodall and Charles Brown, David Fish and Colin Paddon, Phil Spencer and Mike Davis, Ray Gunston partnering John White and finally Bob Winstone with H Thompson – who was giving shots against an opponent for the first time in a match – all played well to secure valuable wins for Sidmouth.

The result was a welcome 5-1 win for the home team. However, Tony expects a tough return match at Honiton on May 14.
