The Sidmouth seniors’ match against Crediton was held in windy conditions with intermittent light rain, which made for tricky playing conditions, particularly against the prevailing wind.

Captain for the day, Chris Grubb, partnered Bruce Harcourt in the opening pairing and they quickly found themselves two holes down against the well-known Enwright brothers, who were once members at Sidmouth before moving to the Crediton area. However, Chris and Bruce fought back and were level again by halfway.

Dropping behind at the 13th, Bruce gained a very good win, with a difficult putt, on 17, to bring the match level, which is how it finished after a very close contest.

Second out, Phil Spencer and Paul Blay won the first four holes, but then promptly lost four of the next six to be all square after 10.

They played well against a very strong pairing from Crediton and with Phil having to give 13 shots, meaning they had to play very well to stay with them, which they did, and with Paul getting a birdie two on the 15th to get them back in front, they eventually ended up three-and-one winners.

Third out were Brian Cole with partner Len Wright, who also had a close match which they eventually lost two-and-one.

Colin Mitchell and Glyn Hewitt also had a very close match and were all square going to the last, but managed to win the last to win by one for a valuable point for Sidmouth.

Charles Brown and Steve Nunn were involved in a similar game, but in a reversal in fortune, lost the 18th hole to lose their match by one against a strong performance from the Crediton pairing.

Last out were seniors captain Tony Stoyle, filling in at the last moment for sickness, playing with club president Roger Bawden. They gave a convincing performance to win their match comfortably by five-and-four to see Sidmouth to an overall three-and-a-half to two-and-a-half victory.
