Sidmouth seniors played hosts to Axe Cliff on a return fixture in pleasant playing conditions, writes Chris Grubb.
With the away fixture having been finely balanced at three-and-a-half to two-and-a-half in favour of Axe Cliff, the Sidmouth team were fired up and raring to go which they showed in a stunning result.
First out were captain David Bromage and Colin Padden were behind by either one or two holes throughout their game until finall,y on the 18th green, Padden holed a four foot putt (much to his surprise), to secure the first win.
The second group out of Adrian Haysom and Terry Blackler having trailed two down for much of their game snatched a win from the jaws of defeat to win on the 18th green again. Chris Grubb and Ken Rothwell quickly went to a 3-0 nil lead after five holes, but their opponents then fought back to hold them at that until they finally won three-and-two.
The fourth game out was a bit special as at one time three of the players had been members of Axe Cliff namely John Townsend, John White and Bob Cook today one of the Sidmouth members (Bob Cook) played for Axe Cliff to make up their shortage of a team member.
Cook scored a birdie two on the 12th green to much anguish, but rectified the situation by missing his putt on the 18th to give the Sidmouth pair a win by one.
Colin Mitchell and Vernon Ruffle eased their way to a fine three-and-two win and the grandstand finish was yet another 18th hole win for Hugh Dorliac and Paul Blay after a closely fought match.
A great 6-0 win was a lift for the seniors with just two home matches to play to end the matches of the summer season.
