On yet another glorious sunny day the Sidmouth Seniors welcomed Wrangaton Golf Club to an inaugural fixture and both sets of players immediately struck up a warm camaraderie, so much so that the after the match procedures and meal fell well behind schedule as nobody seemed to want to go home!, writes Chris Grubb.

Surprisingly shots given were from Wrangaton in five of the six matches and the Sidmouth team were packed with no less than five former seniors captains and a former club captain!

David Bromage who was leading the seniors team for this event was partnered by Colin Paddon opened with a closely contested match, all square after nine holes and not going ahead until the 16th and clinched the win by two-and-one on the 17th with Colin Paddon overcoming the ‘yips’ and putting brilliantly much to his and everybody else’s surprise. Next up were the pairing of Ray Gunston and Glyn Hewitt swept to a comfortable four-and-three win each with two shots given.

Dieter Ritz and John Bainbridge, who continued his good form chipped in off the green three times during their match despite the frustration of forgetting his ‘baccy’ for the much needed injection of stimulant, winning three-and-two.

Former club captain Roger Bawden and John Hicks contrived to lose the fourht match that was theirs for the taking, going down two-and-one.

Colin Mitchell and Brian Cole won three-and-two driven only by the desire to take much needed refreshment at the clubhouse after the match. Graham Rogers and Brian Le Mesurier whose handicap had been cut by two shots from his outstanding score on the previous Mondays club stableford continued their good form, and despite giving away extra shots, won very comfortably six-and-five.

This all left the final score as Sidmouth five to Wrangaton’s one.
