The Sidmouth Seniors grabbed another win at home against a good team from Exminster playing in pleasant conditions, writes Chris Grubb.

David Bromage and Ray Gunston headed the field and soon found themselves five down against opponents who putted very well and despite making a bit of a comeback eventually lost three-and-two.

John Anderson, making his debut this year, partnered Colston Herbert and between them restored the team position by winning by two holes. Les Pratt and Terry Blackler were unable to take advantage of their local knowledge and lost five-and-three.

From there on Sidmouth were on a roll! Firstly John Townsend and David Stone triumphed with an impressive five-andfour win despite causing distractions to team colleagues by talking too loudly while others putted!

Colin Mitchell and Bob Winstone reached the turn two up, but their opponents fought back with the Sidmouth pairing retrieving the situation at the end with a win on the last two holes. Glyn Hewitt/Barry Jones romped home six-and-five winners with Hewitt rubbing salt into the wounds by chipping in from 40-yards for a two on the 12th hole.

With a 4-2 win under their belt the seniors set off for their return match to Exminster on Tuesday.

Rain was forecast but never appeared, which could be said for the majority of the Sidmouth team in terms of continuing their winning streak! Quite the reverse in fact!

Captain David Bromage and Bruce Harcourt failed to master the slow greens, but fortunately Harcourt was in reasonably good form and helped get the pair back to two down, but then letting it slip losing four-and-three.

Lawrence Hill and John Serle put in a spirited performance with a game that fluctuated back and forth before losing out to a narrow two-and-one defeat.

Les Pratt and Vernon Ruffle suffered a similar fate which included visits to the streams and ponds, to which Sidmouth players are not familiar with, and eventually losing three-and-two.

The same fate befell Ken Rothwell and Brian LeMesurier, losing three-and-two.

Pat Kenny and Terry Blackler lost five-and-four with neither player playing well on the day.

The one bright spot for Sidmouth was the performance of David Stone and Brian Cole bringing up the final match with Cole getting two birdies and playing consistently well throughout his round. Sadly, they were unable to hang on and they lost on the 18th hole by one!

That left the final score as a whitewash 6-0 defeat and an 8-4 loss over the two-legs against Exminster.
