TOUR of Britain riders will be taking on Sidmouth’s notorious Peak Hill as part of the South West stages.

Stages four and five of the annual cycling race take place on Tuesday, September 14 and Wednesday, September 15. Over the two days the riders will face six King of the Mountains climbs, and six sprints.

Stage four from Minehead to Teignmouth will be the Tour’s first ever coast-to-coast stage, covering 107 miles (171km). Sixteen teams of 96 rides from all over the world will be competing.

Riders will come through Honiton, Sidbury and Sidford, then down through Sidmouth High Street to the seafront, where there will be a sprint. They will then climb Peak Hill on their way through to Otterton.

A quarter of a million people lined the route of the South West stages last year, generating 6million for Devon and Somerset’s economies.

Devon County Council is co-hosting the stages with Somerset County Council.

Stuart Hughes, DCC’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “This is Britain’s premier cycle race and a great opportunity for people to see some of the world’s top riders. It’s a great spectacle that brings visitors to the region and offers a chance for communities to be part of a special event.”
