Sidmouth Town manager Josh Stunnell warned his team to watch out for Newton Spurs striker Adam Dyson – and for 87 minutes they did.

But three minutes from time at Marsh Road last Saturday Spurs’ star striker slipped the leash and netted an equalising goal.

It finished 1-1, to the disappointment of Stunnell, who felt the Vikings were worth all three points.

“It was a scrappy game, not helped by Spurs tactic of keeping the ball at the back then slamming it upfield,” said Stunnell.

“For 87 minutes we kept Dyson quite and never looked like conceding ourselves.

“We had scored early and it looked like staying 1-0.

“Coming up to the end we had a throw in and should really have taken it long.

“We didn’t. they intercepted and Dyson scored. He had done nothing up to then, but that’s the sign of a good player and he is a good player.

“Afterwards, they celebrated as if they had won the World Cup. In our dressing room it was as if we had lost, though we hadn’t.”

The Vikings have two to play, a starting with next Saturday’s (May 2) visit to Teignmouth where they will have revenge in mind after losing 8-2 to them just a few weeks ago.

“We owe them one, although that defeat did us a favour as it was a kick up the backside we needed at the time,” said Stunnell.

“We are heading for our best finish ever in this division and that was the turning point.”

After the Teignmouth outing Town complete their season 48 hours later with a trip to Tavistock on May 4.
