Sidmouth Town Under-14s certainly had their shooting boots on when they entertained Alphington, beating the Exeter side 13-1.

The Alphas had apparently chosen to leave a number of players out for the game and pitched up with just eight players owing to what the visitors described as ‘disciplinary matters’!

The basement dwellers were duly put to the sword by a free-scoring Town side that now sit proudly at the top of the Exeter and District Youth league Division table.

Sidmouth were six to the good by half-time although it could have been more if the decision making in the build up and indeed inside the final third, had been better.

The pick of the goals was a one-touch move started and finished by Ben Goodier whilst the others were scored by Louis Adey (2), Jack Miller (2) and Tom Moore.

After the break the Town players moved the ball around the pitch really well considering the heavy surface. They were patient in the build-up and exploited gaps as and when they found them.

Louis Spalding put in a great shift and claimed a couple of assists while Matt Salter produced a moment of magic to score on the volley.

Tom Moore was able to complete his hat-trick and then added a fourth to follow up Man of the Match Jimmy Ogley’s penalty which was spectacularly saved by the visiting keeper!

Salter, Goodier and Toby Garrick added further goals before just about all the Sidmouth players pushed up for a corner, Alphington made a quick break and deservedly got a consolation goal!

The Exeter side deserve plenty of credit for the way they battled throughout what was clearly a difficult contest for them.

Town are now top of the Division One table although the other teams are breathing down their necks and have games in hand.

With five games to go Town sit top, but all the chasing teams have games in hand. However, some will meet each other and so Town have every chance of lifting the top honour!
