Sidmouth Under-10s made a big impression when they travelled to Cullompton to play a number of matches.

A 15-strong party made the trip to Mid Devon where the Under-10s took to the pitch looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season against a strong home outfit.

Both clubs fielded two teams and so a mini-tournament was contested.

In the first game, Ben Fisher tackled with the heart of a lion and, together with the combined efforts of Will Bolton, Will Cockayne-Cottrell, James Dalton and Ryan Cozens, the Sidmouth tackling was superb. Another big factor was the energy levels of the Sidmouth players, levels that were maintained throughout as the young visitors’ sealed a 4-3 success.

The second game was equally close with some great ball skills on show, particularly from Louis Cornick, Oliver Bond, Will Bolton and Sam Cole. Again the Sidmouth defence put up a fine fight, grimly sticking to their line and showing maturity and determination not to give up and this resulted in a 4-3 success. All the Sidmouth tries were scored by Will Bolton, comfortably sporting the fastest pair of legs in the match!

On the other side of the pitch Sidmouth were again doing well.

There was good, consistent play and tackling, driving the ball forward by Freddie Barker and Oliver Mitchell.

Finlay Hobday, Charlie Roberts, Freddie Roberts and Laurence Walker did a fine job of tackling, Laurence being consistent and clean in bring down each of his excellent tackles.

Oliver Mitchell made the most of his opportunities in stealing the ball when able and driving through the field.

Gabriel Roberts had another successful game, flying down the field, to score six of the eight tries for Sidmouth. Man of the Match, Will Crick, delivered consistent fine passes and often crafted that last precise pass to set up a score. Mixed fortunes for the youngsters in terms of results as they lost the first encounter 5-3, but won the second 5-2.

A Sidmouth coach said: “All the players involved are to be congratulated on their excellent play. As a team they gelled well to communicate and play as a unit. This was by far our hardest set of games of this season, but the wins were all the sweeter for that.”
