Wellington 7, Sidmouth 36 Sidmouth Under-14s were impressive winners in Somerset, writes Chris Woodruff.

Sidmouth started positively with excellent movement, creating space for Lowe to exploit and Mead to complete; a sign of more to come from two outstanding players.

Harris kicked the side into an early seven-point lead, but parity was swiftly restored by the standout Wellington centre via his great solo run and pass.

In former weeks, Sidmouth might have buckled, but an air of confidence reminiscent of former seasons and with strong work from the forwards, soon saw Cockhayne power home to restore the lead.

Excellent rucking from Stokes and good link play from Degruchy and Perez provided Lowe with the kind of gap he relishes as he brushed aside challenges to open a 10-point lead. A sustained period of defending from Sidmouth and notable performances from Welsford and Stamp was rewarded as a frustrated Wellington lost possession as quick hands moved the ball to Mead who gobbled up the acres of ground as he galloped home to provide a 24-7 lead. For the first time this season Sidmouth’s second half weaknesses failed to appear and the rotating squad maintained the excellent all round display shown in the first half. Sidmouth’s quicker passing play was an increasingly deciding factor as Mead and then Lowe went over following good backing up and support play from Norton and then Woodruff. Harris definitively converted one more to complete the scoring.
