Sidmouth Under-15 girls travelled to meet a mixed Brixham-Newton Abbott side against whom they served up a terrific all-round show to win 54-17.

Amongst many outstanding contributions was the one of Annabelle Emmott in the scrum, on several occasions striking against the head to win the ball and with no time to hang around was fast to the defence for very good tackles and rucking, ensuring Sidmouth possession of the ball.

Araminta May, playing at scrum half, kicked the restarts and provided a cool and calculated link between the forwards and backs, taking on the defence with some strategic pick-and-go runs.

Cleo Turley and Esme Bagwell displayed excellent control of the ball, often taking on the opposition with decisive forward runs and then getting back into the game to loop around to take the offload, creating an overlap.

In addition, centres Abbie French and Rebecca Fallows were always ready for the ball and using their tactical awareness to attack the space broke through the opposition’s defensive line with well-timed off-loading of the ball to Elly Jayne Wadell at winger, who did not disappoint with her inspired evasive runs at a blistering acceleration and speed, outrunning the fastest players from the Brixham-Newton Abbott side.

Esme Bagwell delighted spectators with possibly the best off-load of the season, taking the opposition completely by surprise and setting up Cleo Turley for a superb try.

It was a whole team effort and the girls’ line speed was fast and coordinated, forcing opposition errors and well-executed tackles from Nyah Austin and a strong counter attack from Alecia Ranson, the girls were able to turn over the ball.

Loose ball was efficiently cleaned up and rucks decisively cleared, making way for phase after phase which the girls relentlessly pursued, putting the opposition defence under considerable pressure and which were often rewarded with a try.

The girls played at an incredible pace for the whole match - a credit to their fitness - which ended with a well-deserved 54-17 victory.

The Sidmouth try scorers were Rebecca Fallows, Elly Jayne Waddel, Cleo Turley (who also converted), Esme Bagwell and Araminta May.

Thanks must go to the Brixham-Newton Abbott side, who all played very well indeed and from the sidelines it looked as though all who played had a lot of fun.
