Sidmouth Under-16s lost 41-17 in a bruising battle against a sizeable Barnstaple opposition in the first round of the cup.

The North Devon side played to their strengths from the off with a strong forward performance and well drilled moves that gave them a series of penetrating tries.

Barum also shut down very well and frustrated any open play from the normally expansive Sidmouth. When they did get the chances, Sidmouth capitalised and gained ground with a brace of tries from Ethan Mead (2) and a well-worked kick from George Harris that saw the fleet-footed Toby Degruchy get over the try line.

Next up for the team – the same opposition this coming Sunday in a league encounter.
