Sidmouth 17, Cullompton 14 Sidmouth Under-16s were narrow winners after a compelling encounter with Cully, writes Stuart Cavin.

Sidmouth started really well, forcing the pace and pressure on to Cullompton with some accurate kicking by Tom Counsell followed by aggressive tackling particularly in the mid field by Angus Eaton and Will Counsell.

This style of play forced Cullompton into mistakes which Sidmouth capitalised upon scoring two quality tries scored by Joe Cox and then Jamie Walker in the first half. The second half saw Cullompton come back into the game, Sidmouth worked hard all around the pitch with team captain Aaron Bagwell leading from the front, combining well with David Chan at number-eight who made valuable yards in attack as well as massive impact hits in defence.

Cullompton fought back with two tries of their own, although the grounding of one was dubious. Sidmouth regained their composure and strength and piled pressure on the Cullompton half for the last ten minutes, Max Moore, who played in various positions throughout the game, took a great high ball at full back, made a superb kick deep into the Cullompton half and from this attack a penalty was awarded. Despite being under great pressure, Tom Counsell slotted the kick to seal the victory.

A tense finish of a great game between two fierce rivals, but rightly won by Sidmouth who take top spot in the league table.
