Sidmouth’s hopes of making history and becoming the first team to win the Devon Senior Cup three years in succession was thwarted as they lost by 95 runs to Exmouth in Sunday’s final in Plymouth.

Exmouth won what always looked to be a crucial toss and powered their way to 275-4 in their 40 overs.

Sidmouth did not field particularly well and put down a number of chances. None of the opportunist were easy ones, but, the games big centurion Sandy Allen was put down when he had four to his name whilst Seb Benton, who struck a 65-ball 80, was put down before he had recorded double figures!

Sidmouth lost Matt Cooke and Anthony Griffiths in the second over of the run chase and although the in-form Liam Lewis (80) and Josh Bess (43) provided big contributions the final Sidmouth wicket fell on 180.

A disappointed Sidmouth skipper Will Murray said: “We did not play well on the day. Take nothing away from Exmouth who won a big toss and then did what they had to do with the bat. However, we put down half chances that, in big games, need to be swallowed to get a successful outcome. It’s disappointing and I can’t help feel we let oursleves down on the day, but we have had a great run in the competition, and we’ll be back again next year.”
