A number of veteran golfers came to the fore in the Potbury Trophy contested last Saturday, writes George Carr.

This annual event is always well sponsored and supported by golfers I suspect spend a good deal of their time during the week trying to win money off each other!

Well done then Charlie Ralls and Ron Davies who topped the leader board with an impressive 44 points!

Peter Abrahams and Pat McCormack tracked them all the way a mere one shot adrift in the end on 43.

Rugby veteran Terry O’Brien and his partner Brian Rostron on 42 points also had a share of Potbury’s very generous prize money; among those left trailing by the ‘vets’ were ex club-captains Nick Bater and Pal Hitchcock on 41 points.

Maria Clapp and Angela Coles were the ladies triumphant on the day, four shots clear of the field with 39 point.

The former also claiming the prize for nearest the pin on the fourth green - well done indeed, ladies.

Marie Timms and Julie Lye were second with 35 points and Sue Billinghurst won the prize for nearest the pin on the challenging 12th hole. A hot and happy day in the sun for everyone.

In other club action, president Trevor Kerridge and Sheila Tallon won the Greenwood Trophy qualifier on Sunday with 37 points and remain favourites for this much sought-after trophy.

Seven Sidmouth pairs travelled to Churston for the seniors open there on a hot Monday morning.

I am pleased to be able to report that this reporter and his partner Peter Spooner (who played out of his skin), figured among the prizes and took all the side bets from their fellow travellers (said bets, of course, were settled with the customary grace; thank you gentlemen.)
