Sidmouth Warriors Under-9s suffered a narrow defeat and then bagged a deserved win in matches against Okehampton Argyle and Newton Knights.
First up, they came across an inspired Okehampton Argyle goalkeeper who they were unable to get the better of. The home side scored the only goal of the game – a terrific long-range strike – after which no matter what Warriors tried, an equaliser was not forthcoming.
Alex Goody and Scott Monroe-Higgs showed great energy in the game and there were terrific defensive displays from Dominic Bennatter and Reece Hext.
Next up, Warriors began well against Newton Knights, creating a host of chances with Reggie Reed and Riley Pugsley looking dangerous. However, once again they cam up against a superb goalkeeper! Warriors, with Sidney Ridgeway and James Plowden influential, dominated long periods of the first half, but fell behind to a counter-attack goal and trailed 1-0 at half-time.
Early in the second half Joe Anning struck the equalising goal showing great feet and balance and, within a minute, had turned the game on its head by putting the Warriors 2-1 up. Goalkeeper Haiden Clapp was called upon twice and was extremely quick off his line to maintain the advantage. Young Anning then completed another impressive hat-trick to seal a well earned 3-1 victory.
