Sidmouth took on Axe Cliff in the Parker Trophy with the match played at Honiton, writes George Carr.
A rather chilly Saturday morning found some of Sidmouth’s very best golfers competing in this prestigious county-wide knock-out competition which is played off scratch (three four balls) on a neutral course.
First up for Sidmouth were Duncan Taylor and Martyn White, a formidable combination, who found themselves five up after seven holes before cruising to a four and three victory to give Sidmouth the perfect start.
Second pair, Sidmouth club manager Jonathan Lee and Stuart Coles, had a scrappy start and were one down after seven, and, in spite of recovering to be one up at the turn, they went down two and one on the seventeenth.
Sidmouth’s final pair of Lewis Perry and former county captain Neil Holland were all square after eight holes despite exploring a number of ditches, but class will always out and they closed the game out four and three on the fifteenth to give Sidmouth safe passage to the next round and allowed their brave supporters to beat a grateful retreat to the warmth of the Honiton clubhouse.
