Sidbury Girls U15s enjoyed a sunny day at Cornwood Cricket Club playing in the Devon U15 Super 8s competition.
The first match against Paignton faced a number of Dorset and Devon county players, including the Dorset opening bowler. Paignton batted first with two batsmen making up the majority of their runs to take them to 108, despite 4 wickets for Olivia Morgan and 2 for Imy Bagwell.
Sidbury then batted with Ellie Monro Higgs playing with four partners before retiring on 31 not out. With the score at 97 with two overs to go, a run a ball to win, it could have gone either way. Rosie Miller strode out and hit two twos and two fours to win with an over to spare.
The next match was against last year’s champions - Exeter. Sidbury batted first, facing the Devon opening bowler - there was a theme here somewhere!
Despite a 32 from Lucy Humphries, Sidbury got to just 69 before they ran out of players. Exeter looked strong, getting to 40 off 5 overs. Imy Bagwell then started bowling and in her first couple of balls, got two wickets, with great catches from Lucy Humphries and Ellie Monro Higgs.
The pressure mounted on the Exeter batsman as Ellie Monro Higgs bowled from the other end and got two wickets from her over. Exeter had two runs to get and only two wickets left but in the next over a six sailed over the boundary to seal Exeter’s win.
The last match was against Plymouth who had just beaten Paignton. Sidbury batted first with Lucy Humphies and Ellie Monro Higgs, both retiring not out on 52 and 11 respectively, and Imy Bagwell and Olivia Morgan both getting 12, to give Plymouth a 124 total to aim for.
Olivia Morgan and Imy Bagwell opened for Sidbury and after four overs Plymouth were on 33, despite two wickets and on track for a close game. Lucy Humphries then got two wickets in her first three balls and the game had swung round in Sidbury’s favour. By the 8th over, Rosie Miller had taken two wickets and Lucy Humpries another to close the innings at 44 all out.
Sidbury got the silver in the Devon U15s competition for the second year running. The week before they also took the silver in the finals of the Devon U18s Super 8s with Esme Bagwell and Charlotte Austen-Rigby helping out the U15s Super 8 team. A great finish to the season for the girls from Sidbury.
