Sidmouth Town brushed aside the fact that five regulars were missing to defeat hosts Alphington 3-2 when the teams met in Exeter to contest a Walter C Parsons Funeral Directors Cup first round meeting.
Without Danny Clay, Dan Churchill, Chris Duchenski, Russ Coombes and Ollie Jarrett, Town took a little while to settle and a closely contested first half looked set to end without a goal at either end, but all that changed in the 44th minute when Sam Johnson did well to get past a defender before crossing for Ash Small to send Town in with a narrow advantage.
Boosted by the goal, Town were quickly into their stride at the start of the second half and just two minutes after play resumed, Martyn Hancock struck with an excellent individual effort to double the Town lead.
Small struck again in the 65th minute to effectively end the contest, but a penalty gave the Alphas hope and they did net a second with what was effectively the last kick of the contest, but Town were not to be denied another cup success in a season of on-going cup joy.
Town: Dan Machin, Matt Salter, Ash Mathews, Ben Clay, Danny Burwood, Tony Radford, Will Jenkins, Ash Small, Sam Johnson, Rob Knight, Martyn Hancock. Sub used: Louis Adey.
