Sidmouth and Ottery Hockey Club (SOHC) men’s 2nd XI became just the third team this season to lose to Southern Two basement side Tavistock 2-1.

The Moorlanders had also become the first team to defeat table-topping SOHC 1st XI just seven days before!

The second team went into the game with a much-changed side from their previous outing owing to injuries and unavailability. But the likes of Eddie Rudolph, Tom Curtforth and Ben Plowden stepped up – and contributed plenty to a gritty display that ought to have left SOHC three or even four goals to the good by half-time! As it was, they netted just the one, scored by Tom Vanstone from a penalty corner.

After the break, Tavvy hit back with two of their own to seal the points. The defeat for the second team means they are still in grave danger of relegation. They currently have 13 points from 15 games and are third bottom, ahead of second bottom West Dorset, who have played a game fewer, by virtue of a better goal difference of two!

Tomorrow the second team have a difficult task when they travel to fourth placed Isca C who have been beaten just once at their Exeter University home this season. Kick-off in Exeter is 3pm. However, what is in SOHC’s favour is the fact that in the first league meeting this season, SOHC won 2-1!
