As a neutral green was required for the Interclub competition against Barnstaple United Services Club, the ladies played at Culm Vale, it being a fairly equal distance for both teams to travel. By the 10th end the overall score on the two rinks was 16-9 but Barnstaple fought back to go three ahead at the 15th, scoring 28-25. This was reduced to one ahead at the penultimate end, 39-38 when Jill's team was plus three and Carol's minus four. There was everything for both sides to fight for on the final end. Sidmouth's faithful supporters were quite excited. Surely Jean Brimson, Ann Capon, Eileen Hewett and Carol Smith couldn't draw the five shots needed for their team to win? They did. A real team effort and great play from skip Carol, winning 25-24. With Pat Ashton-Pritchard, Dreda Taylor, Ann Newman and Jill Bishop already winning 18-15, skip Jill, on the last end, brilliantly ran the jack into the ditch making Sidmouth's two shots well nigh impossible for the opposing skip to beat, resulting in a win 20-15. After two most exciting games, an overall victory of six shots was secured. Thank you to Sue Wright, travelling reserve. The Spears Trophy was a cheerful occasion when the ladies invited six neighbouring clubs to send a team of four. Sidmouth put out six rinks and played them in turn. All the players know one another and there was lots of chatter but Sidmouth are very competitive, and there was a splendid shield to win and hold for a year. And didn't we do well! At least, Jean Brimson, Chris Hamer, Ann Capon and Jill Bishop did, winning 29-13. It's good to have the shield back in the club after two years' absence. The best visiting team was from Honiton.
