Sidmouth teenager Kathryn King was honoured at the 2008 Sport Awards organised by the South Hams District Council last week. Kathryn won the Indomitable Spirit Sportsperson of the Year Award, which aims to promote and honour the sporting achievements of disabled people in the district, recognising personal triumph and achievement. Kathryn attends the school run by the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust in Ivybridge. Dame Hannah's provides education, therapy and care for children, young people and young adults with physical disabilities, associated learning and communication difficulties and complex medical needs. A very keen and enthusiastic sportswoman, Kathryn recently participated in the region's largest ever England Athletics South West Disability Championships in Exeter. She has achieved two gold medals in the Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge and takes part regularly in horse riding with the South Brent Riding for the Disabled. She has tennis coaching at the South Devon Tennis Centre in Ivybridge as well as swimming and trampolining at school. Nicky Lloyd, PE coordinator at Dame Hannah's, said: "We are very pleased that students from Dame Hannah's are able to take part in this community event and have their sporting achievements recognised. Kathryn has worked very hard and we are thrilled that she is the winner of the Indomitable Spirit Award." SPIRIT TO SPARE: Michaela Breeze, who represented the UK in the ladies' weightlifting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, presented Kathryn King with the Indomitable Spirit Award.
