The glorious weather on Easter Monday must have sent most of the usual Monday Stableford entrants to the beach to cool down and there was a good field of 65, but greatly reduced from the normal entry of about 100, writes John Rockey

Lester Wilmington responded to the challenge set recently by his son Greg and amassed 40 points, the best of the day. He was delighted with his round, but the unaccustomed superiority over Greg must have gone to his head as he forgot to sign his card and the top prize was snatched from his grasp. Still, he has the distinction of getting his handicap cut to 15. Lester’s oversight left the way clear for Neil Holland, the current Devon County Captain, to win the event with 39 points. Neil’s score of one under par gross was highlighted by birdies on both the third and eighth holes, something most of us can only dream of, and perhaps it’s only a matter of time before he reduces his handicap still further to scratch.

In form Club Manager Jonathon Lee came home in 31 strokes (two shots under the card) to score a very fine 38 points to take the runner-up spot from the ‘on-fire’ Greg Wilmington, also on 38 points. Greg also managed to reduce his handicap still further to 20. Other good scores on the day were made by George Barber, Mick Sherry and Mike Slot, who all returned totals of 36 points to come fourth, fifth and sixth respectively on countbacks.

On the birdie front, last week’s leader David Bater took a well deserved rest and allowed the Club Champion Duncan Taylor, to go back on top of the pile when he added another 4 birdies to take his total to 13. Jonathon Lee also added another 4 to lie one behind, whilst Neil Holland with 5 more moved up to join Mark Thomas, Nigel Winchester and Nick Gingell on 10.
