Teignmouth 1, Sidmouth Town 2

sidmouth Town travelled away to Teignmouth hoping to end a awful run of league defeats. Teign started well and looked a useful outfit, until Vikings’ keeper Luke Ashford was adjudged to have brought down a Teign striker when through on goal after just 20 minutes, writes manager Paddy Thomas.

Down to 10 men and with Jack Knight - who is not the tallest player - standing between the posts, the Vikings looked to be in for a long afternoon.

Instead, they took the lead on the stroke of half time, when Andrew Thomson cleverly followed up a free kick from Wes Tarr that most thought was going wide. The 10 players dug deep in the second half and matched anything Teign could throw at them. The pivotal moment was when Teign were awarded a penalty after 15 minutes, when Knight brought down a Teign player in the box.

However, Knight, who hadn’t played in goal since junior school, threw himself to his right to pull off a stunning save. The Vikings went further ahead when Pete Grover struck a right foot free kick into the top left hand corner from 25yards out.

Town were looking at a first clean sheet for some time when Adam Whitty was penalised for handball and, with the last kick of the game, Geoff Breslan sent Knight the wrong way.

Man of the Match was Mark Badcock who was a colossus at the back for Town, with special mention for Adam Whitty, Wes Tarr, Darren Thomas and, of course, Knight.

Sidmouth were well supported by a large and vociferous crowd that certainly played its part in lifting the players in many tense moments, especially in the second half.

?Jason Margrett has agreed to bring his vast experience to the management team at Manstone Lane and his input and attention to detail can only help the players in the future.
