The intermittent rain did not distract the Ladies’ A team who had a convincing home win over Teign Valley A, writes Lesley Cranston.

Mary Dean and Nicola Keele won both their matches whilst the sibling pairing of Vivienne Bess and Hilary Caldwell almost completed a clean sweep but narrowly lost one match in the championship tie-break. The overall points score was 7-2 to Sidmouth.

The mixed team encountered even more adverse weather conditions last Wednesday night when they took on neighbours, Newton Poppleford away. Wind and rain were the main winners with both sets of contenders battling through in a match that ended honours even. Debbie Snelgrove and Peter Fung again took on the no 1 couple but in spite of some good rallies always came off on the wrong end of the score whilst Di Kendall-Torry and David Thornely (making a long overdue comeback) won their rubber in straight sets. The ladies and men then paired off to take on their respective opponents, the former coming through successfully, but the men succumbed to the stronger opposition resulting in a 4-4 all draw. Well done to all competitors for getting the job done!
