Tenterhook match joy

Having noted a fine performance from Colin Mitchell in the previous friendly as well as a great after dinner joke, Dieter Ritz dispensed with the idea of allowing Seniors Section top brass to join him on the first tee.

Having noted a fine performance from Colin Mitchell in the previous friendly as well as a great after dinner joke, Dieter Ritz dispensed with the idea of allowing Seniors Section top brass to join him on the first tee.

And so it was that, in the next friendly at home to Dartmouth, a highly emotional Colin found himself partnering Dieter in the first match out. Despite having the great Bernard Taylor, who had apparently never lost in a Seniors match as one of the opponents, our pair won their game on the last.

The pin was on the top level and close to the fringe, but Dieter told me that he cleverly pitched the bank above the green in line with the sprinkler head, allowing the sprinkler head to slow the ball and leave it by the pin for the win.

Colin Paddon and David Roberts followed this with a fine 7 and 6 victory, but Ray Gunston and John Bainbridge lost their match 3 and 2 to give hope to the South Hams team. I partnered Chris Ashley in the next match out and, despite only getting our noses in front on the eighth, we won 3 and 2. Tony Crow and Mike Flattley recorded a 4 and 3 winning point to leave us all celebrating in the clubhouse, but we hadn't counted on the celebrations lasting for so long before the last match appeared just before dark.

David Bromage and Colin Burford may well have been spurred on by the sight of their captain striding back down the eighteenth fairway looking for them, then standing on the eighteenth green arms folded as they only took another twenty minutes to putt out for a 1 up win. I have to repeat the quote from our slow play expert, Colin Paddon, who said, as the last four ball joined us in the restaurant: "First time I have played in a match that started on Thursday and finished on Friday."

Result: Sidmouth 5 Dartmouth 1
