Sidmouth Town claimed their first away success of the South West Peninsula League season at the seventh attempt when they won the East Devon derby meeting with Axminster Town 6-3 with Andrew Thomson scoring four times.
The game was played at Acland Park, Feniton and the Vikings made the short trip across east Devon with Alex Raistrick and Adam Kana’ah back in the squad.
The first goal of the game came after just three minutes when Thomson, wearing the skippers arm band for the day, whipped in a dangerous free kick from 25-yards out that was headed past his own goalkeeper by Tigers defender Mark Smale. The lead was doubled in the 15th minute when Mark Pavey delivered a perfect cross for the unmarked Thomson to head home. Axminster halved the deficit with a stunning 20-yard free-kick from their former boss garyh McCauley and, galvanised by that they leveled five minutes before the break when Callum Garrett and Gary Warren doubled up on the left wing, exposing Vikings right back Mike Pidgeon and once in space, Warren curled a sweet shot with the outside of his left foot that gave Ledger in the Vikings goal no chance.
Town boss Josh Stunell had clearly had words with his side for the Vikings looked to have an extra yard in their stride in the early second half exchanges and it was no more than they deserved when Thomson chipped the ball forward and Kana’ah to head home.
With the lead restored Town began to play with more confidence and they took charge of the contest with Thomson the catalyst to some terrific play. Thomson marked the award of the captain’s arm band, scoring three more goals to finish with four in the game.
