Here’s our weekly chat with Sidmouth chairman Fionn Wardrop.

First up this week we asked him for his thoughts on the fact that, with this weekend being the penultimate matchday of the league season, how good is it that all three senior teams are still in their respective divisional title races?

Fionn said: “It is a real club effort to put out three competitive teams every week and our selection committee has done a brilliant job this summer of filling the sides and putting the right people in the right places.

“Saj Patidar chairs the committee, which also includes Luke Bess, Zac Bess, Anthony Griffiths and Rob Fowler.

“We are delighted to be involved in the shake-up in each league, but regardless of how the tables finish we have had a very enjoyable summer, played some good cricket and improved some promising players.”

Next up, we asked the chairman about the club’s batting this season, with club players scoring double centuries for Devon (Josh Bess) and Newton Poppleford (Thomas Moore) and another ton for Elliott Rice in the 2nd XI.

Fionn answered: “Our batsmen have been scoring heavily this summer and this is thanks, in no small part, to the fantastic surfaces that they learn and play their cricket on.

“Colin Whitehall produces the wickets at The Fortfield and Newton Poppleford, which are the best and truest decks in the county. I was lucky enough to watch Josh and Elliot’s innings and they were both exceptional.

“Tom finds batting ridiculously easy and it wouldn’t be much fun to bowl at him at Newton Pop!”

The Sidmouth IIIs face a ‘cup final’ with the game against Bradninch 2nds. Fionn says: “I know there are various permutations re points but the bottom line is, win the game and the title is theirs. What I would say is that the 3rds have had an excellent season and I would be delighted to see this young (mostly) and talented bunch at the top of the table.

Finally, as ever, we asked the Sidmouth chairman if there were any other matters he wanted to discuss. He replied: “Josh Bess deserves all the plaudits that come his way after his performance for Devon against Dorset this week.

“He captained the team to victory, scored an unbeaten 203 in the first innings, 70 in the second, grabbed five wickets in Dorset’s second dig and snapped up six catches in the slips during the match for good measure! He certainly did Sidmouth proud.”
