Ottery St Mary 1, Axminster 3

Ottery St Mary FC manager Mel Coombs is counting the days til the end of the season so he can concentrate on rebuilding for the next one.

They have two more matches left, one at home to Exmouth on Saturday, and away to Stoke Gabriel on April 28.

They hosted fellow basement dwellers Axminster on Good Friday but lost out 3-1 in a frustrating defeat.

Coombs said: “We were awful in the first half and really gave them three goals. The first was from a cross that our keeper should have dealt with easily, the second was when our sweeper passed the ball to the centre forward to score and, for the third, the players just stood and watched the Axminster centre forward shoot from the edge of our penalty area.”

“No disrespect to Axminster but it was embarrassing. They had a lad up front who was very good. He doesn’t normally play and, without him, I think we would have coped well.”

After a half-time ‘roasting’, Ottery St Mary came out and put in a much better shift.

Matt Lyne-Ley took his goal well for Ottery after 55 minutes and they had plenty of further chances to score which went astray.

Coombs added: “I have found this season very frustrating, I suppose mainly because we haven't got a couple of results I thought we should have .

“The other thing that has made it difficult is the attitude of some players these days, which is unbelievable.”
