Tipton enjoyed mixed fortunes over the weekend with a victory over Cornish tourists Seaview Old Boys and a comprehensive defeat away to Tedburn.

Tipton’s 188 against Seaview was built around a solid second wicket stand of 85 between Phil Tolley and Dave Jessop against persistent and accurate bowling. Tolley’s 77, as so often, was the bedrock of the innings and, on his departure Tipton looked fragile until Jim Bugler and Kevin McMeeking added a rapid 27 minute 50 partnership for the sixth wicket.

Seaview’s reply began badly as both openers chose not to play a shot against Dave O’Higgins and were bowled.

A recovery led by Brown and Oliver then shifted the game Seaview’s way before Tipton hit back with crucial wickets for McMeeking and Phil Wright. Skipper Adam Gibbins and Bugler then chipped in with two wickets each to leave the visitors 22 runs short on 166-9.

Tedburn got off to a quick start on Sunday with a 69 run opening stand which ended when L Coren was caught by David Birch off O’Higgins, who then followed up quickly with the wicket of Willoughby. Mark Channon bowled beautifully to slow the run rate, but Tipton found wickets hard to come by, apart from Wright’s dismissal of skipper Steve Baker. Joe Birch and Steve Shaw bowled well at the end to exert a measure of control until Paul Coren broke loose in the last few overs to post an excellent 72 in a total of 206-3.

An improvised opening partnership of Joe Birch and Michael Dawson was quickly broken when Birch cut a full toss straight to Baker.

Steve Shaw manfully orchestrated Tipton’s reply and was given good support first by Alex Tubbs, who was freakishly run out, and Keith Quaintance.

In the end Shaw’s skilful 41 was not enough to make an impact on the challenge facing the visitors, whose innings eventually crumbled to 81 all out.
