A five-minute golden spell by Sidmouth, in the middle of the first half, produced three tries and effectively scuppered Hayle's chances of producing an upset. The first came from a well-honed move involving the Trim brothers at the base of the scrum producing an overlap for wing Ashley Cooper to sprint into the corner. From the re-start Sidmouth moved the ball wide and centre Harry Chesterton embarked on a searing run that took him to within five metres of the Hayle line. Andy Machett completed the touchdown by the post for Dan Retter to add the conversion. Hayle's restart went direct into touch, resulting in a scrum at the centre spot. From the ensuing forward battle, Jack Pyne emerged with the ball and showed that a tight forward with genuine pace can be a great attacking option. His 45m charge for the line, leaving hapless defenders in his wake, will be one of the best individual tries seen on the Blackmore this season. Half time Sidmouth 17, Hayle 0.Sidmouth realised they needed to get the first score of the second half to shut Hayle out of the game. Dan Trim managed to gather his fly-half's kick off, putting Sidmouth instantly on the attack. Steve Trim made good ground and Dan Retter's perfectly weighted pass put Chesterton through a gap to score by the posts. Retter added the conversion. From here on it was one-way traffic with Hayle unable to cope with the pace of Sidmouth's backs. Long runs by Matchett and Chesterton were particularly prominent and further tries were added - Tristan Beavis (2), Chesterton, and a second by Jack Pyne. Retter added four further conversions.Sidmouth's rearranged front row of Knight, Wilkins and Henrickson provided a solid platform throughout and grew in confidence as the game progressed. The supporters and Pyne's Bar Man of the Match awards went to Jack Pyne and Ollie Pyne, respectively. Sorry boys, but dad wants the awards back so he can use them again next week!Next Saturday Sidmouth drop over the hill to Withycombe. Why not make the short trip and lend your support? With Tiverton losing last Saturday it is now a two horse race and Sidmouth have a great chance to secure promotion.
