With only one match left to play, Sidford Ladies’ tennis team are guaranteed to stay in Division 1 of the Exeter and District Tennis League, writes Graham Baker.

Having lost 5-4 at Budleigh Salterton, Sidford were hoping to reverse the result on home courts. New club member Helen Bradford joined the team and played strongly with Jane Chalk to help the regular pairing of Marilyn Barlow and Emma Fidge to a decisive 8-1 victory.

Cranford’s A team had been too strong for Sidford on the away match, where they failed to win any rubbers. However, on the return, at Sidford, Emma and Marilyn played some of their best tennis of the season, showing their skills in all areas of the game, and were delighted to beat the first pair in straight sets. Jane and Helen, still developing their partnership, had a lively game with the second pair and won a well- deserved set, but unfortunately lost the Championship tie-break. Nevertheless the three points from that match has secured their place in Division 1 for next season regardless of any other results elsewhere.

Captain Marilyn Barlow says: “I am very grateful to Emma Fidge, Jane Chalk, Jane Wakley, Helen Bradford and Nicci Humphries, who all contributed to the season’s success. It has been a an excellent effort all-round.”
