For last Monday’s Beer lugger race, six boats made the starting line, writes John Mortimore.

There was a light to moderate northerly wind blowing on a calm sea.

It was good to see the Mary afloat with David Boalch at the helm for the first time this season. There was a blanket start. All six luggers crossed the line within a boat’s length of each other.

First lugger to show was the Percy Mitchell and the Mary sailing close hauled towards the windward mark.

The Mary arrived at the mark seconds in front of the Percy Mitchell with the Kathereen in third place.

Running down to the leeward buoy the Percy Mitchell overhauled the Mary and completed the first round of the race in pole position. At the rear of the fleet Puffin was sailing well to command fourth place from Scrumpy and Little Wing.

Once again as the race progressed Percy Mitchell increased her lead over the Mary.

Scrumpy came through to overtake the Puffin and Little Wing and hold on to take third position from Kathereen.

The race officers decided to shorten the race because the fleet became spread out across the bay. This allowed the Percy Mitchell to finish well in front of the rest.

Result: 1, Percy Mitchell (A Green); 2, Mary (D Boalch); 3. Scrumpy (G Lockyer); 4, Kathereen (M Diplock); 5, Puffin (R Driver); 6, Little Wing (D Townsend). Winner by handicap: Kathereen.
