Members of the East Devon club have been chasing the fish on the both the North Devon and South Devon coasts over the last month. May and June are always a good time to catch some good fish and this year has been no exception.

On a recent boat trip out from Minehead on board the boat Mary Ellen skippered by Marcus James the fishing was described as possibly the best that have been seen for a very long time. Six club members fished over the high water a couple of miles just off Minehead. Uptide fishing did seem to the best on the day but some good fish also came to the more traditional down tide fishing over the stern of the boat.

Best fish of the day went to Wayne Harwood with a cracking smoothound of 17lb 11oz. Other notable fish caught included: Mike Spiller with a smoothound of 13lb 4 oz and a super size bull huss just under 14lb. Steve Butler had the only small eyed ray of the day but it was a good fish of 10lb 11oz.

James Trevett had the best combinations of all the fish because he had a thornback ray of 17lb 6oz, a blonde ray of 16lb 8oz and a conger eel just under 30lb. The fish caught on the day included: bull huss, dogfish, conger, thornback ray, small-eyed ray, blonde ray, spotted ray, common smoothound and starry smoothound.

On the shore fishing side of things catches are also very good with Bill Cassar landing a nice small-eyed ray of 8lb 14oz. Bill recently also had a club record thornback ray from the shore of 14lb 6oz from one of the local beaches.

Ben Bradstock has also been on holiday recently and been hitting the fishing hard, he has recorded four smoothounds to over 10lb with the best at 13lb 2oz and he also managed a specimen small-eyed ray and a new shore record for the blonde ray with a fish of 14lb.

Club casting practice is now up and running on Wednesday evenings in a field just out side Honiton, this a great way to learn how to cast further and safer. Dennis Retter will be on hand on the evenings helping out so you can be sure of a enjoyable evening. Dennis is no stranger to the casting scene as he is the England team casting manager. The club has many good casters in it’s ranks and the club record for field casting is a massive 293 yards!
