The last time these two teams met, Sidmouth were out-rucked, out-tackled and out-run, but how things have changed!A nervy start was soon rectified when Faulkner, showing his customary strength and aggression, rode several tackles for the first of his three tries. This helped to settle the side and, moments later, Webber was off down the left flank for his first of three. Outstanding rucking was the foundation on which this victory was built and the strength and speed of the forward line of Welsford, Pares, Headon, Down, Cooper and Rutland (playing at flanker for the first, and on the strength of this performance, not the last time) resulted in good turnover ball. Indeed, the sight of Down heading towards the line with six opponents attached to different parts of his body will live long in the memories of the home spectators! Recycling from the ruck was well organised by East, back at scrum half, and Jenkins at fly (whose decision-making throughout was excellent) and the speed at which the ball was moved out through the backs (Gosling and Gallantree especially making good yardage) was a telling factor in the space the wings were able to utilise. Sidmouth had to withstand a seven minute spell camped on their 22 but terrific defending kept the score sheet clean at half time. Replacements Harris, Marish, Seldon, Dicks, Clayden and debutant Bishop continued the good work in the second half. Down was able to push over the line for Sidmouth's last try of the game. A loss of concentration and some weak tackling towards the end allowed the visitors two consolation tries. A perfect demonstration of the strides this squad of players, with the coaches, have taken in the last two seasons.
