The second round of the Daily Mail competition took place last Sunday, at home against local club East Devon, against whom there is always that little bit more interest. A great performance from the Sidmouth team, helped by some big winning margins, allowed Sidmouth to progress to round three with a 4-1 win.Nicholas Gingell beat Gordon Benzie 2&1, Duncan Taylor lost to David Blick 3&2, Jonathan Lee beat James Thomas 4&3, Stuart Coles beat Jason Rowbotham 7&6, James Pickard beat Matt Latham 4&3. Match result: Sidmouth 4, East Devon 1John Emmott took the opening Monday event of the season with 40 points, highlighted by consecutive twos on the fifth and sixth holes. James Pickard announced his return to the club with 39 points from a gross 65 and it will be interesting to see just how low his handicap can go as the season progresses. Dave Cocker was indulged in the recent handicap review and this may now appear a mistake as he claimed third place with 38.The new seniors' category contributed over half of the 93 cards returned and top prize was taken by Steve Yarnall with 38, followed by Allen Coles on 37. An extended countback of the cards on 36 saw Douglas Goodall take third on the last three holes followed by Chris Rowe.Birdies - Course record holder Nigel Winchester carded a pair of twos amongst his four birdies on the back 9 to head the standings. Lewis Perry joined him but recorded three of his in the first four holes!Eclectic - Few players escaped a 'blob' so the positions are academic at this stage. James Pickard's 65 leads the way and, if appearing regularly, he will be hard to stop. Others will take comfort from occasional good holes. Messer's Winchester and Taylor will be pleased to have secured a two at the 11th, along with Pickard, while Jonathan Lee made the only eagle of the day at the final hole.Juniors - Only one more match has yet to be played in the Sunday Tigers matchplay quarter finals. The Hill family can be proud, with Tom and Fran both progressing through tough quarter final matches. One of the favourites Dan Corrick played Tom and, after the regulation play, it was all square, meaning extra holes were again needed.
