Alphington 1, Sidmouth Town 2

Sidmouth travelled to Alphington on Saturday with four regulars missing and with Alphington eyeing up a top four finish.

They were sure to be a tough test for a Vikings’ side that had already been beaten twice this season by their hosts. Town got off to their best start, of probably ever, when, straight from the kick off, Andy Isaac lashed home from the half way line after three seconds!

Town increased their lead on 35 minutes when Tim Lister nodded in a superb cross from the impressive Kieran Fayter-Small. So, half time they were leading 2-0.

Sidmouth expected a reaction from the Alphas and were camped in their own half for long periods of the second half. Finally, Alphington reduced the arrears when Mark Burdus was harshly penalised for minimal contact in the box and a penalty was converted to bring the scoreline to 2-1, which was how the game finished.

Sidmouth had a good level of support from their loyal followers who have been treated to some brave performances by this young Vikings side.

Manager Paddy Thomas said: “Apparently we were only going there to be well beaten! In my 35 years in football I have seen many people try, and fail, to score straight from the kick off.

“For Andy Isaac to achieve this was fantastic, although a special mention is warranted for Mike Stamp who noticed the keeper was off his line. Andy is a top lad and his presence, skill and work rate are first class. It is good to see him back after a lengthy lay off due to injury.”

Sidmouth Town 0, Seaton Town 7

Seaton served up a clinical exhibition of finishing to nail a place in the last four of the Morrison Bell Cup against a below strength Sidmouth.

Dan Norman was the star of the show with a hat-trick.

Cameron Vere, Matt Hancock and Alex Wheatley were also on the score sheet.

Boss Josh Stunell said: “It was a powerful show and, whilst Sidmouth clearly were not at their strongest we did win at a canter. In recent years we have not been much of a cup team, so perhaps the tide is turning in that respect. We retain an interest in a number of cups and some silverware on the sideboard at the dinner and dance would be some sort of reward for the collective effort this season.”
