Sidmouth Town hit the goal trail in their Manstone Lane midweek South West Peninsula League Eastern Division meeting with Liverton United, scoring a dozen times to defeat the South Devon-based side 12-2.

It’s been a terrific past fortnight for the Vikings who, after an FA Vase win at home to higher division opposition, then became the first team to deny Bovey Tracey all three points on a league game and then made League Cup progress at the expense of Alphington last Saturday before Wednesday night’s mauling of Liverton.

The die was set for a busy night for the visiting glovesman as Ash Small struck twice in the opening nine minutes.

However, two goals in three minutes, the first being a penalty, between the 19th and the 22nd minutes, saw Liverton draw level, but their joy was short-lived for, after a 34th minute own goal restored the home lead, goals from Martyn Hancock and Dan Churchill saw Town head into the break leading 5-2.

The second half saw 10 minutes of action without a goal before Sam Johnson struck to make it 6-2. Two minutes later a second on the night for Hancock saw the hosts to seven and there was then a 20 minute lull in the scoring before a 77th minute Will Jenkins goal made it 8-2.

Sam Hughes netted the 80th and 86th minutes and there was still time left in the contest for Jenkins to net twice more for him to complete a hat-trick, give Town a round dozen goals and round-off a busy night in terms of the referee’s notebook and recording scorers!

The goal blitz under the Manstone Lane floodlights means that Town have now scored 33 goals in their 10 league games so far this season and, with another 10 goals in three cup ties, they are currently averaging just over three goals every time they play!

The recent cup victories now mean that Town are set for a busy ‘cup schedule’ in October with three successive cup Saturdays! On October 6, they travel to Paignton to meet South Devon League side Roselands in the Devon Premier Cup. A week later they travel to Cadbury Heath to contest an FA Vase tie against a side from the Western League Premier Division and, on October 20, Town will play a Walter C Parsons Funeral Directors Cup tie at home to Axminster Town.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Town are back in league action when they go to Exminster to meet a St Martins side that sit fifth, one place above the Vikings, so an away win would launch Town into a top five slot for the first time this season.

St Martins have played six games at home so far this season, winning two (beating University 6-0 and Newton Abbott Spurs 3-0), drawing three (against Axminster Town, Teignmouth and Waldon Athletic) and suffered just the one defeat, a 1-0 reversal at the hands of Stoke Gabriel.

On the road so far this season Town have played four times, winning 4-2 at University and 1-0 at Honiton and losing 1-0 at Axminster Town and 3-0 at Ilfracombe Town.
