CULLOMPTON Rangers surprised Sidmouth Town with their performance in the East Devon Senior Cup but, in the end, they had no answer to a Premier team in top form and lost 2-1.

"I was impressed with Division One side Cullompton. They did seriously well and were a very balanced team, but we never looked in danger of losing," manager Paul Ashford said.

A cross from Dan Norman went in to put Sidmouth ahead. Cully equalised - the first goal conceded by Sidmouth for three weeks - before Ben Ashford scored the winner.

"We had to change things around a bit, as we will have to during the season, but we hit the bar twice and it was a sound performance. I really want to concentrate on the league," Ashford added.

This weekend Sidmouth are home to University in Premier League action. The Reserves are away to Chard Town.

Many of the former Sidmouth Town players were in action on Sunday in a match arranged in memory of footballer Paul Sedgewick who died recently. Gary Bargery, Martin Carnell, Jason Stiling, Ashford and Ray Clapp got the players together.

Goals were scored by Kevin Tooze, Jason Stiling and Dickie Seldon for Sidmouth, Wiggy Pulman and sub, Paul Ashford, 3, for Honiton. Thanks go to Phil Margrett for refereeing and all who helped raise over 200 for research into Leukaemia.
