SIDMOUTH Town 1st XI proved just what they are capable of by beating Thorverton 5-1. Now, says boss Paul Ashford, they just have to show they can do it week after week. After just three games the Vikings are poised in sixth position in the Premier table and Ashford is fully expecting them to beat Newtown away tomorrow. Ashford said: "We could storm the league if the players were about each week, but I cannot field the same side for this week's match!" He was 'chilled enough' to sit on the touchline having a cigar at half time, his side being 4-0 up after as good a performance as he has seen during his time at the club. "I have played ball with the players, being as accommodating as I can be, but I told them that enough was enough and they certainly produced the goods. They were out of the blocks like lions and produced quality stuff, incredible. There were some cracking goals and, if we could keep it up for the whole 90 minutes, we would be some side." The impressive Andy Thompson scored the first two goals, one a free kick, the other a swivel shot turned into the top corner. Chris Duchenski converted a penalty and talented young player Ben Valentine made it 4-0. Valentine is one of the men missing from this weekend's line up as he broke a bone in his foot during the game. Billy Jaworski came off the bench in the second half to make the score 5-0 and Ashford was disappointed to concede a late goal, the back four, and keeper, having been up to every test thrown at them. Thompson and Jaworski are off to university this weekend along with Steven Williams - all will be much missed and Ashford is hoping that they will all play whenever opportunity allows. Matt Wonnacott played well at the heart of defence, Alex Raistrick, 17, had a superb debut and Lewis Perry, another youngster, also had a great game in the back four. Wonnacott has had time in the Exeter City set-up and Ashford hopes he will enjoy his football with Sidmouth after a spell out of the game. "We have some really talented players, but how I wish I could name the same team week after week," Ashford added. The match was sponsored by Upper Crust Bakery.
