Sidmouth Town will attempt to write another chapter in the club’s history tomorrow (Saturday) when they look to complete another act of giant-killing in their FA Vase meeting with Godolphin Atlantic at Manstone Lane (3pm).

The Cornish side are based in Newquay and were beaten 4-2 on Wednesday evening at Bodmin Town, that a second defeat in their eight league games so far this term – the others have produced three wins and three draws.

Town were also due to be in action on Wednesday night, but their Eastern Division game at home to Waldon Athletic did not take place – the match was postponed after the non-appearance of the referee!

Town boss Richard Pears says: “It was both disappointing and frustrating, particularly as both sides were raring to go.

“We did try to get a replacement official in at late, late notice, but then he suffered a car breakdown and, at 8.30pm, we gave up and called it a day without a ball being kicked in anger.”

Pears continued: “I guess, in terms of the bigger picture, not playing means we have fresher legs for this big FA Vase tie, but it was all a big let-down for another good turnout of home support – hopefully we will give them something to cheer about on Saturday.”

Pears will certainly be hoping his side do not make the same sort of mistakes against Godolphin Atlantic that they made last weekend when a wonderful opportunity to become the first team to stop high-flying Elmore taking all three points was lost in what was ultimately a 3-2 defeat with the Mid Devon men scoring twice late on to ‘steal’ the points!

Pears says of the defeat to Elmore: “Where do I start! That was a very bitter-sweet afternoon. We played them [Elmore] off the park, but ended up losing as we committed the cardinal footballing sin of making schoolboy errors in a contest that we absolutely deserved to emerge victorious from.

“We gave Elmore two penalties and were masters of our own downfall, but I shall be looking to turn that to our advantage in this FA Vase tie when we’ll be making sure the players know that if they do similar – in terms of the school boy errors – then our FA Vase journey will end. That said, for 80 minutes against Elmore we ran a very tidy team ragged and I am looking for similar tomorrow.

“There’s no escaping the magnitude of the day in terms of the football club and the opportunity for the players to be part of another special occasion. We have nothing to lose in this game for everyone will be anticipating success for the Premier Division team.

“However, if they are not on their game, and we play as we did for those 80 minutes against Elmore, then I see no reason why we cannot do ourselves, and the club, proud.”

Martin Hancock, who picked up two yellow cards in the Elmore game, begins a suspension, but back in the squad is Robbie Knight, who missed last weekend with injury. Everyone else is fit and available and Pears says: “It’s now a good headache for me as I have to make sure, with such great current competition for places, that I pick the side best suited to get us the result we hope for.”
