CLUB President Ken Hutton, hosted a President s Day match.

CLUB President Ken Hutton, hosted a President's Day match, inviting all those members who take active roles in club, with tea served for all between two sessions. A total of 48 bowlers took part, playing either for the President or the Chairman. In the morning session, the chairman was comfortably ahead and maintained that position through the afternoon and it was a very enjoyable day's bowling. At the tea interval, it is traditional for the President to invite his own special guests including, on this occasion, Wynne and Les Clark, Allan Charlton, Allan Holcombe-Block, Dennis Passmore, Tom Reynolds, Cliff Hewett and Harold Casson. An excellent tea was provided and the chairman, Trevor Ashton-Pritchard, thanked the president for his generosity, on behalf of all those present, l The club had two home friendly fixtures over the weekend against teams from Chardstock and Ottery St Mary. In these events there is always speculation as to which team will benefit from the tea break as the game invariably turns around. It was certainly the case with Chardstock who found themselves seven shots behind at the break but went on to win by 61-44. Clearly, Sidmouth got the wrong pot of tea!Best winning rink for Sidmouth were: Pat Hague, Paddy Wrench, Michael Hunt and Barry Mortimer (skip) 17-15.In the Ottery match, Sidmouth led all the way, finishing 20 shots ahead at the close. Best winning rink for Sidmouth was Betty Farmer, Margaret King, Ray Tallent and Bert Hague (skip) with a score of 37-12.The men's match away to Exonia was played as a triples. Unfortunately, only one rink had sufficient time to finish 18 ends, due to an overrun of a County Trophy match, which made the result somewhat inconclusive.l We often see players adorn their bowls with stickers, stars, funny faces and personal number plates these days, in addition to their club logo. The laws, both indoor and out, are basically the same in that there should only be one sticker of identification on each side of the bowl.In friendly and local competitions, additional or different stickers are generally accepted by all players. However, it is worth remembering that, as we progress in county competitions, opponents may well object and, at National level, more than one sticker on each side is definitely not acceptable.Another point that is not clear, is whether or not a bowler can paint the concentric rings or the dimples on the bowl. Under outdoor laws it is specific that this is allowed. The indoor laws do not mention the fact, therefore, it is generally accepted that painting is allowed.
