In a meeting earlier in the season Sidmouth had lost to Saracens by a single point. With the match relocated to a good surface at Clyst Vale to avoid a waterlogged pitch, and the sun shining, Sidmouth were upbeat about their prospects. Sidmouth, with the kick off, set out their stall and, five minutes in, and with defenders still to beat, centre Ashley Caldwell sprinted into the left corner to run round and score under the posts. Robbie Powell converted. A stylish solo effort by Paul Bright saw a second try in the left hand corner. With the conversion missed Sidmouth were 12 points ahead. Saracens fought back and scored an unconverted try. Sidmouth settled quickly back into a pattern. Repeated powerful bursts by Josh Sergeant and Kieran Davies established a platform for the backs. Breezing past his opposite number flyhalf Ollie Cave popped a short pass to flanker Ozzie Shaw who touched down from five metres. Powell, his kicking boots now well warmed, slotted over the conversion from the touchline. Saracens, hinting at events yet to come, scored a well worked try from a driven scrum. Sidmouth backs continued to weave their magic. Billy Naylor broke through the central defence to pass to Shaw who, with pace not seen from a Sidmouth forward since his father retired, scored to the left of the posts. With the score at 26-12 it was a satisfied coach Rob Boaden who strode onto the pitch a half time. After the break Sarries stepped up their game and starved Sidmouth of possession.
